Massive New Ethereum Update Around Corner: Here’s All You Need to Know

Ethereum

The structure of the blockchain network is anticipated to undergo major changes as a result of an important Ethereum update. Recent discussions and coordination of the execution of various Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) among the Ethereum core team marked a significant step towards the planned Cancun update.

The effect study of EIPs 4758 and 6780, which call for changing Ethereum’s self-destruct mechanism, was at the centre of the discussion. Currently, this function enables a full transfer of ETH from one address to another without requiring the receiver to run any code. While EIP 6780 adds restrictions to minimise its impact, EIP 4758 suggests changing the function to “sendall” and eliminating its ability to erase any bytecode and reset data.

Although certain decentralised apps (dApps) already operating on Ethereum may be affected by the change, developers generally agreed that the impact is tolerable because the majority of dApps can be updated to support the new logic. Notably, the creators also mentioned the potential introduction of a new command, “setcode,” in order to maintain the capacity to replace code in smart contracts.

A crucial component of the update, EIP 4844, was also discussed by the developers. The Ethereum transaction mechanism will be altered by this proposal in order to increase effectiveness and lower costs. Developers concurred that EIP 4844, which specifies the maximum amount of “blobs” per block, should be updated to include new block validity standards.

EIPs 4844, 6780, and 1153 are anticipated as part of the Cancun update in addition to these noteworthy ideas. EIPs 5920, 5656, 7069, 4788, and 2530 are further EIPs that are being considered. A new “pay” opcode (EIP 5920), increased memory copying effectiveness (EIP 5656), revised Ethereum call instructions (EIP 7069), and giving direct access to the execution state through the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM; EIP 4788) are among the ideas.
