ETH Deneb Upgrade: Ethereum Developers Reveal Key EIP Inclusions

ETH

Following the successful Shapella update on April 12, Ethereum developers are moving on with their plans for Deneb, often known as “Cancun-Deneb,” the upcoming ETH upgrade.

The update will put new improvements into effect at both the consensus layer (CL) and the execution layer (EL). The upgrade for the execution layer is “Cancun,” but the upgrade for the consensus layer is “Deneb.”

To keep things simple, the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism is implemented in the consensus layer, and the transactions are carried out and the block header’s state is verified in the execution layer.

The Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844, commonly known as “proto-danksharding,” which intends to improve Ethereum’s scalability, is anticipated to be the most important improvement in the Cancun-Deneb update.

Blobs are the new transaction type that will be introduced by EIP 4844. They are utilised by Layer-2 rollups to save costs.

EIPs in Deneb upgrade

The most recent ETH ACDC call’s highlights are presented by Christine Kim. Developers talked about the Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that will be incorporated into the Deneb update this week.

The discussions centre on EIP 4844’s SSZ concerns as well as EIP 4788 and EIP 6987, which would be part of the Deneb upgrade.

Developers have decided to include EIP 4788, “Exposing Beacon Chain Roots in the EVM,” in the Deneb update. Proofs of CL state on the EL for trustless verification by smart contracts would be made possible by EIP 4788.

Danny Ryan, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, stated that CL client teams will begin integrating the code modifications for EIP 4788 into Deneb for formal testing.

The code modifications connected with EIP 6987, “Forbid Slashed Validators from Being Elected as Block Proposers,” were also a potential candidate for inclusion in Deneb and would shortly be included to Deneb specs for testing.

Developers previously spoke about including PR 3175 into the Deneb update. Slashed validators cannot be chosen as block proposers thanks to PR 3175, which is now being structured into an EIP.

Christine Kim states in response to a query on the anticipated date of the Deneb upgrade, “One of the developers put out a rough estimate of Q3, but until the scope of Deneb is finalised, it will be difficult to estimate.”
